Open Door Resource Center removes itself as co-host of AIDSWalk Richmond 2009 Signature Event

For those of you who have asked of the relationship between AIDSWalk Richmond and Open Door Resource Center, today is the day we are able to offer answers. Unfortunately, today AIDSWalk Richmond received word that ODRC, Inc. is no longer interested in co-hosting the event.

Open Door Resource Center, Inc., was organized in May 2006. The non-profit organization was established to empower minorities living in the greater Richmond area who are infected as well as affected by HIV/AIDS. Open Door's services are designed for women, men, children and a special focus on the unique needs of military veterans and the mentally challenged. Open Door's mission is to deliver world-class educational resource programs that will help stop the spread of HIV/AIDS by reducing at-risk behaviors in specific and hard to reach populations. The organization's direct services and outreach programs are considered critical for addressing the heart and root of this epidemic and trying to put a hold on the long-term health of our community.

Although Open Door Resource Center has ended its relationship with AIDSWalk Richmond, the organization still plans to participate in the walk and make grant and donation application for benefits from the foundation. The nullification of this agreement will hold no effect on the outcome of benefits paid to the center on behalf of AWR.

One Step At A Time, A message from AIDSWalk's Founder

With great excitement AIDSWalk Richmond kicked off its community fund raising initiative in March 2009. In the 2 months leading up to where we stand today, there has been a great outpouring of community strength and support. For all of you who have given your time and energy to AIDSWalk Richmonds creation, I truly thank each and every one of you for all you have done. Where do we go now you may ask. Where do you fit in? How can you continue to help? This is only the beginning, so trust me, there will be many ways you can assist AIDSWalk Richmond.

Those of you who have attended the weekly benefits at PEARL Restaurant and Lounge are already familiar with the challenges the City of Richmond faces. The general population has allowed the AIDS crisis to fall away from concern. This is part of the reason the rate of new infections climbed 23% in the last 3 years. Although there are many clinics and social service organizations throughout the Metro area, they can only do so much while still attending to their clients. AIDSWalk plans to create a series of special events dedicated to bringing education to residents of the metro area while serving as a beacon of guidance to show those who live with HIV/AIDS they are not alone. All AIDSWalk events are dedicated to offering support and strength to individuals impacted by the disease while educating all the citizens of Richmond on this epidemic.

Although AIDSWalk Richmond plans to build its signature event "One Step At A Time" into the main fund raiser, there are many other community outreach programs planned. The plan of AIDSWalk is actually made up of multiple initiatives. Supporters of the signature walk will be able to work on their fund raising year round in an effort to guarantee each participant meets or beats their personal fund raising goals. You will be able to find tips, support forms, and other valuable information in the "Downloads" section of our website. These will offer tips on fund raising, planning, and will give insight on other organizations which may offer added support to the work you do. Second, AIDSWalk Richmond will host many special interest events throughout the year. This will include the Classic Cares Car Show, and the Pet Prance. Each event will offer both entertainment and education on the status of HIV/AIDS as well as its prevention. Would your business or social group like to host a special event? Please contact AIDSWalk Richmond.

If you have not already done so, please take a moment to fill out the contact form to be placed on our mailing list. This will be a great way to stay up to date on special events going on in the community. Please remember, AIDSWalk Richmond is only going to be as strong as its weakest link. This means we all must do our part to control the infection rate through outreach, education and community bonding. Remember, HIV/AIDS knows no race, religion, gender, sexual orientation or age. Neither does AIDSWalk Richmond.

While AIDSWalk Richmond continues to build, please stop in weekly on Tuesdays at PEARL (1713 East Main Street) where 100% of the cover (after 9pm) goes directly to AIDSWalk Richmond. Once again, I thank you for your support. With your help, I look forward to building AIDSWalk Richmond into the most celebrated fund raising walk in the City of Richmond! Together, we will overcome...

...one step at a time.

Best Wishes,

Scott Sibley, Founder
